CNN —Sadiq Khan has won a third term as London’s mayor, Labour Party sources claimed on Saturday, capping a round of local elections across England that confirmed the political supremacy of the main opposition party. Sunak has resisted calls to outline when he will hold that vote, and Labour leads opinion polls by a huge margin. Keir Starmer’s opposition party won control of eight councils, and also stormed to victory on Thursday in a Westminster by-election in Blackpool. In particular the loss of Oldham council, a north-west English town, where around a quarter of the population is Muslim. If his victory is confirmed, Khan would become the first mayor of London to serve a third term since the post was created in 2000.

New Labour Party MP for Blackpool South, Chris Webb (C) reacts as his win is announced at the count centre in Blackpool, north-west England on May 3, 2024, during the Blackpool South by-election. The opposition Labour Party won a Blackpool South by-election, taking the seat from the Conservatives. The Reform UK party, founded by Brexit proponent Nigel Farage, came in third. Labour leader Keir Starmer posted on the social media platform X that the "swing towards Labour in Blackpool South is historic." Angela Richardson, deputy chair of the Conservative Party, told the BBC the result "was not unexpected," especially given the circumstances that sparked the by-election.

Britain’s Conservative Party suffered striking early setbacks on Friday in local elections that are viewed as a barometer for how the party will perform in a coming general election and a key test for the embattled prime minister, Rishi Sunak. Only a minority of the results had been announced by early Friday, but already the signs were ominous, if not unexpected, for Mr. Sunak’s Conservatives, who have trailed the opposition Labour Party by double digits in national polls for 18 months. The Conservatives have lost more than 120 seats so far, including six in Hartlepool, in northeast England, where the Conservatives had made inroads after Brexit but have more recently lost ground to the resurgent Labour Party. Labour also won a special election for a parliamentary seat in Blackpool South, a seaside district, in a huge swing of votes away from the Conservatives, who had held the seat but narrowly missed finishing third, behind Reform U.K., a small right-wing party. The previous Tory member of Parliament, Scott Benton, resigned in March after becoming embroiled in a lobbying scandal.

To Danny Yong, the Middle East is still Asia. In particular, multi-strategy hedge funds, the industry subset that large allocators are desperate for thanks to their uncorrelated and consistent returns, are growing in markets like Hong Kong and Singapore. Houston-based Pan Capital is planning to hire macro PMs in Hong Kong this year. These people-heavy firms need plenty of talent to make it all work, and the relatively small size of the Singapore market, coupled with political uncertainty in Hong Kong, puts a strain on the entire system. "Managers follow allocator trends, and the Middle East has been actively allocating while other regions have slowed their deployment.

In Jez Butterworth’s new play, we — the audience and protagonists alike — are kept waiting and wondering. It’s the summer of 1976 and Britain is in the midst of a heat wave. They must decide whether to put her out of her misery with a high dose of morphine, or let her continue to suffer. “The Hills of California,” written by Butterworth (“The Ferryman,” “Jerusalem”) and directed by Sam Mendes (“The Lehmann Trilogy”), runs at the Harold Pinter Theater in London, through June 15. REUTERS/Phil Noble Acquire Licensing RightsSINGAPORE, Nov 14 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Orsted’s (ORSTED.CO) recent implosion has finally prompted a reaction. Denmark’s $17 billion offshore wind producer on Tuesday said Chief Financial Officer Daniel Lerup and Chief Operating Officer Richard Hunter were stepping down. The COO is responsible for the procurement, construction, and operations of the wind farms, and supplier delays accounted for the lion’s share of Orsted’s U.S. writedowns. Yet Mads Nipper, who became Orsted chief executive in early 2021 and handpicked the departing duo, has been spared for now.

Telefonica and Liberty Global have been working with advisers on the sale of up to half of their combined 50% stake in Cornerstone. Vodafone (VOD.L) owns the rest of the business through its Frankfurt-based subsidiary Vantage Towers (VTWRn.H). Spokespeople for Telefonica, Liberty Global, Virgin Media O2 and GLIL declined to comment. Cornerstone, established in 2012, is Britain's largest tower company, managing more than 20,000 sites, according to the company's website. In recent years infrastructure and private equity investors have competed for slices in some of the largest tower deals, including Deutsche Telekom's sale of a majority stake in GD Towers, because of their stable cash yield and long-term contracts.

General view of the Walney Extension offshore wind farm operated by Orsted off the coast of Blackpool, Britain, September 5, 2018. The result was bad news for Britain's 2050 net zero emissions target, which calls for 50 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2030 versus around 14 GW now. In a 2022 auction, offshore wind projects were the main recipient of funding, with 7 gigawatts (GW) awarded, but developers did not even bid in the latest auction, the results of which were published on Friday. The lack of new offshore wind capacity would cost consumers 1 billion pounds a year, it added. Bid prices for renewable energy CfDs are expressed in 2012 money, with inflation meaning actual prices are higher.

The Ocean Wind 1, Sunrise Wind, and Revolution Wind projects are adversely impacted by a handful of supplier delays, the company said in a statement. In July, Orsted's Ocean Wind project won approval from the U.S. Interior Department, to help the country reach its goal of developing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 on every shoreline.

General view of the Walney Extension offshore wind farm operated by Orsted off the coast of Blackpool, Britain, September 5, 2018. "The situation in U.S. offshore wind is severe," Chief Executive Mads Nipper told reporters on a conference call. The company's Ocean Wind 1, Sunrise Wind, and Revolution Wind projects are adversely impacted by several supplier delays, which may trigger impairments of up to 5 billion crowns, the company said in a statement. On top of this, the increase in long-dated interest rates in the United States affected both offshore as well as some onshore wind projects and will cause impairments of around 5 billion crowns, Orsted said. The U.S. government has set a national goal to develop 30 gigawatt of offshore wind by 2030.

A flying instructor died during a private flight last year, according to a new safety report. The pilot thought his instructor was "just pretending to take a nap," before realizing he was dead. As he failed to garner a response from the instructor, the pilot finally realized something was wrong, according to the report. West Ham secured their ticket to the fourth round after Said Benrahma scored a stunning long-range effort against his former club in a 1-0 win at Brentford. Josh Windass netted twice for Wednesday as they took a two-goal lead over Newcastle in the second half. Yet they did little in the way of replicating the form which saw them lead 2-0 after 43 minutes against West Ham when they met in the Premier League eight days ago. Brentford are now out of both domestic cup competitions, having exited the League Cup after a loss to League Two Gillingham in November. Elsewhere, Premier League sides Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest suffered defeats by Championship teams Burnley and Blackpool respectively.
